Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) - Scientific Research Summary

Reishi is frequently prescribed in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a panacea. It is widely used by both laymen and professionals in the Orient as a treatment for things as innocuous as stress or weight loss to more serious conditions such as arthritis and even cancer.

One of the most ardent proponents of reishi is Dr Fukumi Morishige, a Japanese medical doctor working with the Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine in researching the use of reishi for cancer.

The following case reports were given by Dr. Morishige in a speech re-printed in the periodical, Chinese Traditional Medicine Part III.

Born in Japan, Dr. Morishige was unavoidably familiar with reishi long before hearing of its use in cancer treatment. Naturally, he believed the same as any other medically trained professional, that perhaps reishi might yield some marginal results on benign conditions but he felt certain any further claims were surely exaggerated. Not until two of his own cancer patients exhibited signs of remission, which they attributed to their use of reishi, did his curiosity peak.

The first was a 39-year-old female with lung cancer. Several hospitals had given her the same prognosis. The condition was too far progressed; there was nothing they could do to help her. She’d also been having secondary complications to the cancer in the form of edema of the chest cavity. But by the time she came to see Dr. Morishige six months later, those symptoms had completely disappeared. The patient herself insisted the improvement was due to 4 grams of reishi per day.

Next was a young boy with congenital liver cancer. At five years of age, his doctor had told his parents the cancer was terminal and subsequently discontinued treatment. Four years later, the parents took their son to see Dr. Morishige, who was no longer able to find any traces of the cancer. The boy’s parents told Dr. Morishige they’d been administering reishi to their son via his naso-gastric feeding tube. It was after this that Dr. Morishige decided to take a closer look at reishi’s effect on cancer.

The following are five of his case studies using reishi and Vitamin C (for prevention of side effects):

Case 1: A 70-year-old male patient who had lost consciousness due to a 5 cm (2 in.) brain tumor was administered 6 gm of reishi per day starting in June of 1986. By September, he had regained consciousness. He continued to take reishi orally after regaining consciousness, now 3 gm/day. By December of that same year, brain scans showed the tumor had diminished in size. Once the size of the tumor had been reduced to 1 cm, the patient was released from the hospital and returned to live with his family.

Case 2: A 50-year-old woman who had lung cancer and was coughing up blood was put on 6 grams of reishi per day. After six months, the tumor had disappeared. At the onset of treatment, she was unable to climb stairs. At the end, she was able to climb stairs with little effort.

Case 3: A woman with breast cancer and metastatic bone cancer suffered excruciating pain and an inability to move below the neck. Dr. Morishige started her out on 9 gm/day of reishi and then increased it to 20 gm/day. In two months, the patient was free from pain, able to walk, and was released from the hospital.

Case 4: A patient with rectal cancer, which had metastasized to the liver, was administered 6 gm/day of reishi. CT scans taken 6 months later showed tumor shrinkage and patient reported feeling better.

Case 5: A 60-year-old male diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer with a short remaining life expectancy began 9 gm/day of reishi orally, in combination with 30 gm/day of Vitamin C intravenously. One year later, he was completely symptom free and back to work. He continued using 5 gm/day of reishi after being released from the hospital.

Dogs With Diabetes

How can you determine if your dog could potentially have diabetes? In the vast majority of cases, it is not very likely for younger dogs to contract diabetes, but if your pet is more than 4 years of age and is exhibiting other symptoms, then the potential for diabetes could be a real one. Diabetes in dogs is quite a bit more common in females. Many of a dog’s symptoms are a lot like those of diabetes in humans.

Symptoms for Dogs that have Diabetes

* Canine diabetes can begin with an out of shape, overweight dog. This is not always true though; in some breeds it can be in the gene pool. Being obese can be a dangerous sign though.

* Diabetes normally occurs in dogs around the ages of seven to nine.

* With larger dogs there is more of a possibility to contract diabetes than there is with a littler breed.

* Watch for unending thirst. If this occurs, do not try to limit your dog’s water intake. This is important because your dog will require all the water it wants to help keep from getting dehydrated.

* Drinking so often means he/she will need to use the bathroom more often. Your pet, the one you’ve worked so hard to house train so well could start having accidents more often on your carpet. Why? They are not used to carrying around so much liquid in their bladder. Much like the chicken and the egg, and the debate of which came first, the need for water or the need to urinate has been discussed both ways.

* Your dog may begin losing weight quickly and unusually, even though she is eating more and could begin moving slowly and showing signs of being worn out, acting extremely tired.

* Your dog may start losing their eyesight, having issues seeing.

Preventing your dog from getting diabetes:

1. If you see your dog beginning to gain weight, or if they are already overweight, lower the number of carbohydrates they consume. Yes, much like humans, a large number of carbohydrates add to to weight gain, which adds to the likelihood of diabetes. Many common dog foods have ingredients that include as much as 98% carbohydrates. Read the food labels and learn as much information as you can about your dog breed to make sure that he is getting the correct amount of nutrients. Making the switch to a healthier dog food can be an enormous step towards the right direction.

2. Get plenty of exercise! A lot of dogs get diabetes that could be completely avoided if they had kept exercising and not gotten out of shape. This is where you and your family can pitch in, as the dog owners. If your dog stays lazy and out of shape, he can contract diabetes even if he is not a breed that is typically at risk.

As of this writing there is not a cure for diabetes. Work together with your vet to ensure that your dog gets the proper treatment and the correct medication to continue to have a normal life. Sometimes diabetes will remain all the way through your dog’s life course. To prevent diabetes symptoms in dogs, do your best to keep your dog’s weight appropriate, get him abundant exercise, and give the dog its medication on a regular basis along with adequate water.

What happens when my dog has worms?

As your pup sniffs, barks, and scratches its way through life, not a care in the world, eating everything it wants, rolling around in unpleasant things, doing all the things that make being a dog fun. Then out of the blue, you might notice unwanted visitors hanging around for the ride. One such unwelcome hanger-on could be worms.

Thankfully, you can notice and guard your dog from worms early. This can keep them from progressively getting worse, which makes life easier for you and your dog.

A few of the signs your dog may have worms:

* Diarrhea, especially if you perceive blood in it.

* An itchy rear. If you notice your dog scratching its rear on the floor or against furnishings, it may be irritated by worms in this area. Another possibility is that they are having issues with glands in these areas, not with worms.

* Worms or eggs visible in the dog’s feces - Yes, this is the most known way to tell if your dog has worms. Take note, though, that not all types of worms can be seen by the naked eye.

* Vomiting, perhaps you’ll even notice visible worms.

* A dull coat

* Appetite loss

* Dehydration leading to more drinking and as a result, the need to urinate more often.

* Noticeable worms in the fur or in the vicinity of the rear - Tapeworms might look like small moving segments in these areas, which can later dry out.

* Weakness, more hunger, weight loss - If your dog is infected with worms, the worms are robbing your dog of necessary nutrition. Your dog could be eating but still be fragile or constantly hungry, and even could be dropping weight.

* Bloated belly - This is a common sign when puppies have had worms transmitted from their mom.

How dogs can become infected with worms:

Heartworms often are transmitted from mosquito bites. Tapeworms can come about from eating contaminated fleas or other insects. Hookworms can be transmitted by ingesting their eggs or larvae. They could be transmitted from inside the womb of a contaminated mother. If the larvae are in water, drinking contaminated water can result in hookworm infection. Watch where your dog drinks its water from and stop it from drinking dirty water. Roundworms can infect a mother’s fetus. Ingesting contaminated deceased animals can also lead to roundworms. Whipworm contamination happens from eating or drinking contaminated water or food.

Preventing worm symptoms in dogs: Ask your vet to test your puppy early on, as early as 3 weeks after they’re born. They could already be infected with worms and need quick action. Take your dog to your vet annually for examination and have a stool sample taken. Regularly give your dog products that prevent roundworms and heartworms. Use products that keep fleas off your dog. Fleas can give your dog tapeworms if they ingest them. Keep your home and carpets clean. Keep your dog away from wild animals or other likely sources of parasites, like drinking from puddles or other dirty water sources. Stop your dog from eating dead animals. Carcasses can spread worms. Keep your dog from consuming feces. This is the most typical way a dog can get intestinal parasites.

If your dog shows symptoms of being infected with worms, please visit your vet to figure out what the issue might be. Treating your dog with the best care can keep your dog healthy and prevent problems in the future.

Agarikon (Fomes officinalis) - A Native American Miracle Mushroom?

Agarikon (Fomes officinalis) is one of the largest and longest living mushrooms in the world, some individual specimens known to be as old as 50 years. This needs to be seen in perspective of the fact that Agarikon starts out growing on already mature trees. It requires old growth forests to survive.

Fomes officinalis is first mentioned as a medicinal mushroom by Greek physician Dioscorides in the Materia Medica of 65 B.C. where it was listed as a remedy for tuberculosis. This makes it the oldest medicinal mushroom in Western literature. [25] Written records and oral traditions from Poland and other areas of Europe suggest that Fomes officinalis was in fact the principal medicinal mushroom of ancient Europe as a whole, not only Greece.

It may be a species of a bygone era. Agarikon is practically extinct in Europe. [146] Most remaining Agarikon mushrooms are now found in the moist old growth rain forests of western North America. Fortunately, it can be cultivated, so there is no immediate risk of losing the genetic material. Paul Stamets business Fungi Perfecti based in Washington State grows it, as does the company Mushroom Harvest out of Ohio.

There is little modern research on the medicinal use of Agarikon extract but traditional use of this medicinal mushroom included tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and pneumonia (Bacillus pneumoniae and others). It’s also been used topically as a poultice to relieve muscle and skeletal pain.

In 2002, an article by K. Grzywnowics was published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms supporting this information. Titled Medicinal mushrooms in Polish folk medicine, it states that Fomes officinalis was indeed used to treat lung conditions, including asthma and coughing, as well as painful skeletal conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Polish healers considered it an elixir for long life. In addition to lung and musculoskeletal conditions, it was also used to treat infected wounds and open bleeding. [147]

But Europeans did by no means have exclusive knowledge of the healing benefits of Fomes officinalis. According to oral traditions of some Native American tribes, it was used as a remedy against smallpox and other diseases brought to the Americas by Europeans. (Note: No written evidence exists to corroborate this claim.) One of these tribes was the Haida of the Pacific Northwest Coast, among whom a mythological reverence of the Agarikon mushroom also connects it with female sexuality and the female creator spirit known as Raven.

Two mentions in modern scientific literature include Agarikon extract with other mushrooms that elicit a strong immune enhancing effect in subjects. [148, 149]

Finally, a word of caution: Two of the common name synonyms for Agarikon (Fomes officinalis) are “Quinine Conk” and “Quinine Fungus,” due to the quinine-like bitter taste of the mushroom. However, Fomes officinalis does not actually contain the compound quinine and is not known to be effective against malaria.

How To Get The Dream Body You’ve Always Wanted.

Staying fit and healthy is of utmost importance if you want to live a more peaceful lifestyle. Did you know that America has the highest rate of obesity deaths? Did you know that it also has the highest rate of obese citizens?

If you hadn’t already taken the time out to do the research and find out about this fact, then I suggest you keep reading. I can honestly say that America lacks priority, simply put. I can honestly say this because we are the leading country of unhealthiness.

I was once part of this unhealthy death cycle until I found out that my vascular system started to shut down on me so-to-speak. I mean, there were times when literally it felt like someone had their hands clenched around my neck.

The amount of oxygen that I was left with blew my mind! After the many times of nearly passing out from countless asthma attacks, I decided to take matters into my own hands once and for all!

I knew darn well that I wasn’t going to let this thing tear my body down. I started to do massive research on health products such as herbs, natural soaps, supplements etc.

I’m so glad that I made the decision to do this thing myself because if I hadn’t, I probably would not be here right now. I cannot count the number of times I was admitted to the hospital due to asthma attacks and colds.

I felt like sooner or later I might become a hospital resident I was so sick. So, I threw away all the traditional ways of health-care and flipped them for the better.

Ever since that bold decision, I’ve been more healthy, I have more stamina, I’m more social and just enjoying life to the fullest. This is the first time in my entire life that I ever even had the chance to enjoy it.

Now, it’s time to educate the masses on the benefits and sheer gold that life has to offer. I feel that it is my mission to inspire others to live healthier lifestyles with the help of this blog.

Nothing bothers me more than to travel place to place and see people that are overweight, hunched over, or coughing and sneezing like a maniac. Mypast sickness is my motivation for lifelong healthiness.

A Couple Of The Primary Inositol Benefits

Inositol is a sugar that is absolutely vital to the production of glucose. Although it is not necessarily a nutrient that is considered to be completely vital and crucial in survival terms, it is important in a number of ways and many people who suffer from Inositol deficiencies do suffer from problems such as constipation. Here are some of the main inositol benefits.

Anyone who is depressed may consider taking a supplement that contains this nutrient in order to get over the depression. It has for a long time been used in order to help with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other depressive illnesses.

It can also be very helpful in producing lecithin in the body. This is a very important hormone that will move fat out from the liver and into the cells. This helps in the reduction of cholesterol.

It is critical in helping to protect the organs as well. Generally it will have an impact upon preventing the hardening of the arteries. This in turn will help to protect the liver, kidneys, and heart. It is also important in helping to maintain cell growth in the eye membranes, bone marrow, and intestines.

There are, of course, several different side effects that will come along with this supplement, as they would be with any other type of supplement. Some of the common side-effects will be dizziness, tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, and headaches.

You should always make sure that you check first with your doctor before incorporating any such supplements into your diet. It is possible that you could have a potentially fatal reaction as a result of taking this nutrient in the wrong dosage and therefore you do need to be careful. If you are pregnant you should also avoid taking it as no studies have been completed as to the effect it may have on an unborn infant.

Why You Need DHA Supplements

You ought to consider DHA supplements, should you want optimum health. The thing is, DHA is one of the many omega-3 fatty acids that our bodies need. The catch is with our current food chain, we don’t take advantage of the omega-3’s that we would once get. It’s not possible to get omega-3 essential fatty acids via a vegetarian diet, and with the way fish, cattle, and fowl are raised, they do not get to eat enough natural, free-range foods. For this reason their bodies don’t absorb enough omega-3’s. Hence when we finally eat them, unfortunately we cannot obtain the omega-3’s we’d like.

This is the real failure in our food sources. Omega-3 efas, especially DHA are essential in the optimal functioning of our bodies as well as of our brains. You need omega-3 essential fatty acids to live a long, healthy, vibrant life!

Because of this, if you would like live for your fullest, you’ll want to supplement your omega-3 intake, especially those of DHA and EPA. Read much more about DHA. But suffice it to say that DHA is actually a critical portion of brain and body health.

Omega-3 fatty acids in general promote health and wellness by affecting a great many of our bodies’ processes.

By way of example, the correct intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids incorporates a positive influence on your own heart health. Not just that, but it really makes your brain function better, along with your joints, skin, eyes, including your disease fighting capability.

DHA especially is paramount in brain health.

DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid. DHA is found in cold water fishes. It originally stems from the organisms these fish and their food eat. DHA is the most prevalent omega-3 acid within the brain. So, you will notice why it’s so central to thinking processes! For that reason, DHA, or the lack of it, may be connected to anything from strokes to Alzheimer’s disease.

Hormone Balance Can Be Achieved With A Healthy Lifestyle

Hormones play an important role in a person’s well-being and health. When your hormones fluctuate it can effect ovulation, fertility, sexual desire and mood. In women an imbalance of estrogen can cause early menopause and all the symptoms that come with it. Nutrition, diet, lifestyle, exercise, stress, emotions and age all have an affect on hormone balance.

People of any age can have hormone problems, from the late twenties through the forties. PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can cause hormone problems that manifest themselves in weight gain and can be treated with estrogen cream and ovulation medications. Eating a balanced diet high in fiber and low in fat is recommended. You can go to an obstetrician, an endocrinologist or a gynecologist for diagnosis and treatment as they specialize in this area.

Women can have different types of hormonal imbalances that include high or low estrogen, progesterone and androgens. High levels of estrogen are common in women especially when they are over the age of 35. Being overweight, having high blood pressure or diabetes can also cause excesses of estrogen. This condition is known as estrogen dominance. Symptoms may include migraines, cramps, depression and irregular periods. Low estrogen levels are common during menopause, when a woman has had a hysterectomy, during chemotherapy or if one has an auto-immune disease. Women who exercise a great deal with very low body fat may experience low estrogen levels. Mood is greatly affected and neurotransmitter fluctuations can affect thinking, pain levels, digestion and sleeping. High levels of progesterone can lead to fatigue, cause vaginal dryness and dizziness. Androgens regulate the function of many organs including the kidneys, liver and muscle. They also affect the libido. Untreated high levels can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Birth control pills, drug use, caffeine, alcohol and stress all can cause imbalances in hormones. Bad eating habits can lead to changes in the brain. Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia will cause hormonal imbalances.

After the birth of a child a woman’s hormones will be out of balance. Post-partum depression affects about 13 percent of new mothers. The thyroid can also be affected by childbirth in a condition called post-partum thyroiditis where the thyroid becomes inflamed and a woman will gain weight and feel fatigued. This condition can be properly diagnosed through a blood test.

Some women experience hormonal imbalance when they are taking birth control pills or after they stop taking them. Women on the pill tend to have low testosterone. These synthetic hormones alter the menstrual cycle so women aren’t producing their own estrogen, progesterone or testosterone and over time leads to a permanent loss of natural hormone functioning. Some women who go off the pill can be hormone deficient from weeks to years.

Some other reasons for hormones to become out of balance can come from prolonged stress, premature menopause and glandular problems. Being under stress for long periods of time taxes the body’s ability to cope with it. Premature ovarian failure can occur in women below 40 who lack the hormones to ovulate or menstruate. The pituitary, thyroid and hypothalamus glands all have a part in the production of reproductive hormones.

If you think you are having a problem with your hormones see your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep, exercise and nutritional food. Stay away from processed foods and sugar, eat fresh vegetables and fruits. Take time out of your busy schedule to relax, do some Yoga or meditate to keep your body in balance. Hormone balance can be achieved with the right lifestyle and through hormonal imbalance medicinals.
