Revealed The Best Foot Pain Relief

The feet, like every aspect of the human body an amazing invention but there comes a time when we need foot pain relief. Fortunately, there are some simple steps we can implement to stop the foot pain and prevent it becoming anything more troublesome. If you have circulation problems like diabetes, then you require extra care and should seek medical advice before attempting any of these suggestions.

One of the easiest things we can do is to take a load off your feet. If you do a lot of standing, be sure to take breaks to take the weight off your feet. Whenever possible try to elevate the feet at 45 degrees to the body and relax in that position for 10-15 minutes. The position of elevation will move blood away from the feet and help with controlling swelling.

A pampering thing you can do is to give your feet a soak. Simply put 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts into a small tub of warm water and give yourself a foot bath for about 15 minutes. The Epsom salts are great for tired or aching muscles and provide good foot pain relief and they will also help to revitalize your feet.

A very easy remedy for foot pain relief is hot and cold therapy. This can be done by sitting on the edge of the bath, so you can run water onto your feet. Alternate hot and cold water on the feet for 1 minute at a time. Make sure you use a comfortable temperature. End with using cold water.

Great foot pain relief and pleasure can be had with a foot massage. Get your partner to massage your feet using some baby oil, massage lotion or moisturizer. Before standing up, put socks on as this will prevent slipping. You could even massage your own feet. With oil, use your fingers and thumbs to apply a medium pressure on the sole of your foot. Start at the ball of the foot and work towards the base of the foot making small circles. Then will harder pressure work along the arch of the foot from the base up to the toes. Finish with the toes by squeezing, pulling and gently rotating them.

Ice is excellent for helping with foot pain relief. Prevent ice burn by placing a towel or cloth between your skin and the ice. Apply for ten minutes, then have a rest for ten minutes and repeat two more times. This will revitalize the feet and help with any swelling.

Just like any other muscles in the body, the foot muscles function best when they are strong and flexible. Regular exercise is all that is need to do this. A proper fitting shoe with adequate support is a great start. Other simple exercises can be rolling the foot over a golf ball. Just place it under the sole of your foot, do not stand on it but use the weight of your foot on the ball to massage the sole. You can exercise the muscle by using your toes to try and pick up various things. Tissue paper, dried beans or marbles scattered on the ground can give a good work out.

Cranial Sacral Therapy: The 110 Year Old Art Form

Cranial Osteopathy was originated by the Osteopathic physician, William Garner Sutherland D.O. (1873-1954). His 54 year epic journey began when, through Divine Providence, he notice that the cranial sutures of the temporal bones were “beveled like the gills of a fish” indicating the ability for movement with the parietal bones. this articulation allowed for expansion and contraction. His conversations about this discovery with his mentor Dr. Andrew Stills, the founder of the osteopathic school in Missouri, began his epic journey into the world of Cranial sacral therapy. Both men believed that the cranial system was “designed to breath”. He called this breathing movement the primary respiratory mechanism. This idea that the bones of the skull could move was contrary to contemporary anatomical belief, then and today by some scientist and medical practitioners. Dr. Sutherland was a deeply spiritual man and later described the foundation of the system as the Breath of Life from the Book of Genesis 2:7. This acknowledgement of the vital force became a fundamental aspect of osteopathic philosophy.

My studies of craniosacral therapy began in the mechanical model. Then I moved into the biodynamic model. The three systems are called mechanical, functional, and biodynamic. The biodynamic system is comprised of the spine, its cranial sutures, the fascia of the body, and its diaphragms. The cerebral spinal fluid moves through the spinal cord in a semi closed hydraulic system; the amount of intervention changes the name of the system. The mechanical model has the most intervention, the functional has less, and a biodynamic the least amount of intervention.

Dr. Sutherland’s work at first, was largely rejected by the mainstream osteopathic profession. He began to teach this work to other osteopaths from about the 1930s until his death in 1954. Craniosacral therapy comes under attack even today because it lacks supposed authenticity and offers no scientific support. I find this laughable, Dr. Rollin Becker, DO, was Dr. Sutherland’s most accomplished protege, who quit his normal practice of osteopathy after 20 years, to spend the last 35 years of his practice performing nothing but craniosacral osteopathy. His work was founded on its efficacy to deal with a myriad of painful issues. He would have been out of business if it didn’t work!

Remember when people said the earth was flat. Shamans have used methods that were unsubstantiated for thousands of years. Just think about Copernicus and Galileo, look what happened to them. Disbelievers are always looking for some reason to disbelieve. I have made a wonderful living without the benefit of third party insurance I can assure you that it’s happened only because of the efficacy of the work. I am not one of these alternative therapists who believe it’s important to throw out the baby with the bathwater. I do believe that all strong spokes make up the most efficient wheel and there are too many wonderful benefits of modern medicine to throw it out. Only an idiot holds that doctrine. Conversely, the modern medical system needs to pay more attention to alternative medicine that works beautifully for so many chronic pain issues and complaints.

“To be still and know” is the mindset of the biodynamic approach of craniosacral therapy. Toward the end of Dr. Sutherland’s journey, he began to feel a power which was generated deeply within the body’s own tissues. This power had the intelligence to make decisions much more profoundly than any external force that was applied by a practitioner. This discovery changed the entire treatment focus. It went from subtle touch to spiritual reverence. His lifetime work influenced Dr. Rollin Becker, Dr. James jealous and Franklyn Sills in the UK with whom I studied with for two years. Now, hundreds of thousands of people practice the legacy of Dr. William Garner Sutherland.

Chiang Mai, Thailand Spas-Peak Spa Review

I reviewed the Peak Spa and Beauty Salon on Wednesday July 14, 2010. The staff was not aware that I was doing a review. The Peak Spa has been in Chiang Mai since 2008. They are located past the Night Bazar, just before the Shangri-La Hotel.

The spa itself has a spacious feel, the decor is a contemporary Asian style. All parts of the facility that I saw were clean and fresh. Each member of the staff that I interacted with was polite, friendly, and accommodating.

The Peak has a fairly extensive list of massages, body treatments, scrubs, wraps, and more. You can visit their web site for a description of these. I picked one of the two hour packages that included an aroma massage and an organic honey scrub. The therapist doing my treatments was named Mo, a pleasant woman with a gentle demeanor and strong hands. She’s been employed by the Peak for the past two years.

The session began with choosing a treatment from their menu and a cup of tea. They have three essential oils to choose from for the aroma massage, lavender, eucalyptus, and ylang ylang. They are in a base of sweet almond, jojoba, and rice bran oil.

My package included a scrub done with a heated honey and grain mixture. The scrub was done first and lasted about thirty minutes and was pleasantly energizing. This was followed with a shower to remove the honey mix prior to the massage.

Generally when I’m getting a massage, I don’t direct the therapist too much. I like to let them do the style of massage they like. It will usually be the style they are best at and as a result I usually receive pretty good massages. I do however often suggest a tone such as relaxing or energizing and so on. The pace and tempo of a massage will help to create either a relaxing or invigorating result from the treatment. As a rule, a massage done with frequent rhythm changes and a faster tempo will be more invigorating and one done more slowly will be more relaxing.

I would describe the massage I received from Mo as being a hybrid of Thai, Swedish, and deep tissue. She began with quite a lot of fairly deep compressions and stretches normally found in Thai massage. She followed that with some Swedish type strokes with oil. She worked quite deeply, sometimes with elbow and forearm. Her natural tempo was rather fast and as a result the treatment was more invigorating than relaxing. One of the essential qualities of a good therapist is the ability to be “present”. It is the presence that makes a technically good massage into a transcendent experience. Mo has that presence.

The total for all this good stuff was 2100 THB or around $65 USD. The Peak is currently running a “buy one get one free” promotion. Check their web site for details.

Overall, I was quite pleased with this treatment and I would recommend the Peak Spa.

Helichrysum Essential Oil: Nature’s Healing Synergy

We have been using Aromatherapy for quite some time without realizing it, in the form of Ben Gay and Tiger Balm, for sore muscles and stiff joints. Yet until recently, the real powerhouse of pain relief, Helichrysum italicum, has gone relatively unnoticed. The oil is now becoming more and more popular, as it not only relieves pain, but actually speeds healing of many injuries and ailments. What’s different about Helichrysum than oils that have been used traditionally for pain? Why might it provide better effects than the Wintergreen found in Ben Gay? Here’s a look at the multitude of actions of Helichrysum, and how you can benefit from this effective natural plant medicine.

Healing The Body’s Structure

To reduce pain and heal structural tissues at the same time, a synergy of active ingredients is necessary. That’s why aspirin and ibuprofen reduce pain, but don’t stimulate healing — they only address one part of the equation. Essential oils are naturally made up of many chemicals — one oil can have more than a hundred identifiable molecules. And because of their molecular structure, they’re very compatible with our physiology. When topically applied, they pass right through our skin and into the bloodstream and underlying tissues where they can quickly get to work.

Inflammation Reduction

A great many drugs today, including the most popular over-the-counter pharmaceutical medicines, are made to specifically reduce inflammation. Swollen, irritated tissue will tend to both hurt, and cause more inflammation — which of course hurts more! And that’s just the surface of it — inflammation not only causes pain, but ages our body more quickly. Curcumin, the extract of the spice Turmeric, has become a very popular dietary supplement to treat inflammation. Helichrysum essential oil is high in related compounds also with strong anti-inflammatory activity: alpha-, beta- and gamma- curcumene. The essential oil can be made up of 10-25% curcumenes, depending on the region where the plant is grown. One of the oil’s most beneficial uses is during the initial stages of physical trauma, greatly reducing slow-healing hematomas (bruises) from forming.

Muscle Relaxant

Helicrysum contains a significant amount of “neryl acetate”, a molecule from a larger group known as “esters”. These are the predominant relaxing molecules found in many essential oils. The relief of chronic muscle spasms has a two-fold action: one, release of the tension instantly brings pain relief and an increase in energy flow (anyone with neck muscles in this condition know how the mind can feel hazy as a result). Second, once this tension is relieved, circulation to the area is increased. This is crucial to the healing process, as it allows the flow of damaged material out of the area, and new healthy material in.

Cellular Regeneration

Helichrysum contains molecules regarded for their ability to signal our cells to heal and regenerate. These compound are called “di-ketones”, of which Helichrysum specifically contains several “italidiones”. You’ll find the essential oil an ingredient in nearly every wound healing and scar reducing formula in aromatherapy. (It should not be used on open wounds due to its anticoagulant effects, but is suitable once an injury is no longer likely to bleed). These same regenerative di-ketones make the oil an excellent choice for all sorts of skin-care recipes; the regenerative action can be complemented by a carrier oil like Rosehip seed, whose carotene content also supports skin healing — these two oils together form the foundation of many anti-aging skin care blends.

Quicker Healing by Preventing Bruises and Blood Clots

Helichrysum essential oil is called for at 100% strength in one particular use: preventing the formation of bruises and hematomas. When an impact injury occurs, one of the first physiological responses is the filling of the damaged tissues with fluid, and the blocking of further blood flow through the area. Blood already in the area will stagnate and turn dark, resulting in a bruise. This is a natural response to prevent us from causing further damage. However, it also slows the healing process. One or more applications of the essential oil will prevent the initial swelling from occurring, and limit the formation of a bruise. This typically gets one “back into the game” much more quickly, as many avid users who are also fitness addicts will attest to. Twist an ankle, apply some oil. Bump your head, do the same. Works every time!

User Experiences with the Oil

Users have reported impressive results with the use of Helichrysum for all sorts of injuries. Many are astounded with the speed that they feel pain relief. Sports enthusiasts have dubbed the liquid “magic oil”; more sedate office workers are also very appreciative of the relief their aching backs receive. Those with a “crook” in their neck feel better in minutes. Because of the oil’s relatively recent arrival on the world-stage of natural healing — and its continued relative obscurity — it has not yet been the subject of scientific inquiry. Yet this shouldn’t prevent you from a little experimentation. A few milliliters is all you’ll need to see if the oil works for you.

Speeding Sports Injury Recovery With Essential Oils And Aromatherapy Techniques

Essential oils have long been used by athletic trainers and sports massage therapists to support the health and performance of their athletes. Aromatherapy massage is used both pre-and post workout and competition, to improve performance, speed recovery, and lessen chance of injury. Many ointments and lotions for sore muscles include essential oils and essential oil extracts (e.g. ‘Tiger Balm’, ‘Ben Gay’, etc). Modern medical aromatherapy literature describes the use of oils to even speed the healing of both chronic and acute injuries commonly seen in sport. Here is an overview of the many ways to use essential oils to keep any athlete interested in natural health and fitness performing their best.

Essential oils can promote the health and fitness of athletes in many ways, the most common being the pre- and post- exercise (or competition) massage. Long used by top athletes around the world, sports massage with essential oils plays an important part in warming up the muscles before exertion and removing lactic acid (thereby speeding recovery) after a hard effort. Massage formulas often these essential oils - Eucalyptus, for invigoration, circulation and opening airways; Lavender, with anti-inflammatory effects, relieves pain, relaxes spasms, and brings mental calm without sedation; Rosemary relieves pain, stimulates the mind and body, and has a warming effect on the muscles; Juniper Berry, used in the post-exercise formula, detoxifies and helps eliminate lactic acid from muscles; and Sweet Marjoram which helps relieve cramping in over-exerted muscles.

Blending your own massage formulas for pre and post exercise massages is simple - just between 10 and 30 drops total essential oils to each ounce of carrier oil (Sweet Almond, Grapeseed and Hazelnut are good choices). Generally, the more essential oil in a blend, the more stimulating it will be; lower concentrations of essential oil will be more relaxing. For pre-exercise, to warm and loosen the muscles, open the airways and awaken the mind, try eight drops Rosemary, four drops lavender and four drops Eucalyptus essential oils to each ounce of carrier oil Peppermint can be used in place of the Lavender if you’re really looking to ‘get going’ - though if you’re prone to anxiety before strenuous efforts, stick with the Lavender. Use light, quick invigorating massage strokes. For post-exercise, a little deeper massage can be performed with longer strokes toward the heart - this will assist removal of lactic acid and other metabolic waste products. Try eight drops Lavender, four drops Juniper Berry and four drops Sweet Marjoram, or, when the muscles are really over-exerted, try eight drops Eucalyptus, eight drops Peppermint and eight drops Ginger essential oil.

Aromatherapy oils can be used during pre and post exercise baths and showers as well, using the same oils and blends mentioned above. Be sure to add any oils to the bathwater after the bath is drawn so they do not evaporate before you get in. Before showers, essential oils can be applied undiluted to the body; this is particularly advised post-exertion to support the elimination of metabolic wastes. One drop each of Rosemary, Lemon, Eucalyptus and Peppermint essential oils can be ideal for this purpose. After a shower or bath is an excellent time to apply a massage blend to the entire body - the pores are open and the skin is clean, enhancing absorption. Choose a stimulating or relaxing blend depending on your condition.

Essential oils’ medicinal value goes beyond just warm up and cool down rubs. In many sports, stronger healing properties are often needed due to cuts and scrapes, bruises, twists and sprains. Essential oils can powerful healers of skin, muscle and connective tissue. Many oils are known to have strong anti-inflammatory action, and contain certain molecules which signal the regeneration of tissue. And, of course, there’s the stress-relieving ‘aromatherapy’ aspect, which further enhances the healing process.

To treat bruises and strains, there is no match for the synergistic molecules making up Helichrysum essential oil. Helichrysum (also known as Everlasting oil), is touted by Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D.: “Used for bruises, sprains, and twisted ankles - usually accompanied by swelling and subsequent hemorrhages - this oil proves to be practically a wonder cure.” Keeping a small bottle on hand is wise, as with most treatments involving swelling, quick application provides the best results. In cases of bruises, twists strains or strains, apply a thin film of the oil directly to the affected area immediately, then apply frequently as a ten percent dilution in any carrier oil until healed (the oil will help with serious injuries, but is not a substitute for proper medical attention if needed). A blend of Helichrysum and Jojoba can also be used for chronic injuries such as tendonitis - simply massage a small amount into the affected area a few times a day.

Active athletes and fitness buffs will often incur minor cuts and abrasions. Essential oils are an excellent choice for caring for such wounds due to their antiseptic and soothing effects. A 50/50 blend of Tea Tree and Lavender is a wonderful, all-around skin healer. The Tea Tree prevents infection while the Lavender sooths the area. Apply directly to cuts and scrapes after the wound has been properly cleansed. If this is too strong a blend for the younger ones, simply apply a drop or two to the gauze portion of a band-aid and cover the wound for the same effect. The ratio of Lavender to Tea Tree can also be increased for an even more soothing result.

Beyond the obvious direct applications, the overall health and fitness of any athlete can be supported using essential oils. Athletes can be particularly susceptible to illness during hard periods of training and competition. Diffusing Eucalyptus, Thyme, Tea Tree and/or Lemon in the air can reduce the chance of illness. Niaouli is an excellent oil for supporting the immune system in general, and should be applied neat to the chest and neck after showers for best absorption and effect (use 10-20 drops). A strong immune system will always go a long way to keeping an athlete happy!

This is a brief overview of many common applications of aromatherapy for supporting the health, fitness and performance of any athlete. There are a great many essential oils available with similar properties that may work better for some individuals. Such is the nature of aromatherapy - if a particular aroma or oil is appealing, it will probably be helpful at that time; if the aroma is too intense or offensive, it may be over stimulating or otherwise incompatible with the body chemistry at that time. With a little research and experimentation, one can certainly find a place for the natural healing powers of essential oils in their sports and fitness program!

Are you in need of some alternative medicine?

We all strive for holistic health. Even something as small as a headache or stomach cramps can throw a wrench in our routines. This is why you’re reading this right now, because you want to be free of health related nuisances. A holistic approach could be the answer, as it protects you from medicine related side effects, as well as keeping your mind, spirit and emotions in check as well.

Some of the alternative healing methods people are rediscovering include aromatherapy, massage, herbal medicine and acupuncture.

Alternative means an option thus alternative medicine is the concept of a different, unusual and even unconventional treatment procedure in the prevention or cure of varied illnesses and ailments. There are many different types of this medical approach, ranging from ingesting Chinese medicine, usually from medicinal plants and herbs, to yoga, meditation, massage and even aromatherapy. One of the oldest and the most well known alternative methods are the traditional Chinese medication techniques.

Thanks to the medical industry being profit oriented and trying to build a nation of people dependent on medicine rather than trying to actually cure people, many people are becoming disillusioned and turning to other options. The most common complaint heard is that the medicine will often help you in one area but hurt you in another.

The common process in western medicine is to fix the current problem now and worry about the rest of the body later. This is the opposite of holistic medicine practitioners. Due to the growing understanding of holistic healing methods, its popularity is skyrocketing in the US and abroad. Taking advantage of the drawbacks and negative feelings toward conventional medicine. In the last 2 years alone, the herbal medicine market grew 200% in just 2 years time.
