Train Your Chihuahua - Make them Even Cuter
The Chihuahua is one of the cutest dogs in America. Few owners are ever interested in training their little dogs, considering their small and harmless demeanor. But despite its size, it is a breed of aggressive little dogs. Chihuahuas are known to be very stubborn. Hence, they need a more serious training regimen which should be started while they are young.
Why You Should Know How to Train a Chihuahua
Chihuahuas have their own distinct ways. They have developed these traits for hundreds of years that they have been treated as personal pets. While it is good for dogs to be attached to their masters, this can also lead to aggression issues, especially if they are not provided with the necessary training and socializing classes.
A majority of Chihuahuas act bigger than their actual size. This can become a cause for them to get hurt especially if they are not properly trained. Moreover, they have a tendency to be aloof especially to strangers, aggressive towards other dogs, unfriendly towards kids and they easily become agitated even to slight commotions outside of the house. Being confined in a little world makes the it a very territorial little dog.
How to Train a Chihuahua
The Chihuahua has a high sense of dominance. Being allowed to run freely in the house, it thinks that it is in control. If you want to train your Chihuahua, the very first thing you must do is to let it know that you are the alpha leader. Do not allow it to go just anywhere it likes. Establish boundaries and clearly define the places where it is not allowed to go. This will be clear enough to make the it learn that you are the one in control.
Take control of your Chihuahua’s feeding schedule and let it know that it can only eat at your disposition. This is one way of getting its allegiance.
Walking the Chihuahua at least twice a day is a good way to exercise it and to prevent it from getting bored, but allowing it to dictate it’s direction will only reinforce its stubborn nature. To control it, you should take control of its leash.
Again, defining boundaries is very important in keeping your Chihuahua’s behavior in check. You should not allow it to go just about anywhere in your house.
Do not pet it every time you arrive or depart from your house as this can reinforce anxiety. You can attend to it as it relaxes about 10 minutes later.
It takes an alpha leader to train a Chihuahua. They need to submit in order to remove their tendency to dominate.
Optimizing Mental Stimulation
Chihuahuas are small and they easily get tired, but most of them lack sufficient exercise because their owners don’t give them the chance. Stimulate it mentally by training it to perform basic commands like sit, stay, speak, quiet, fetch and other tricks.
Setting the rules and being consistent with them will make training easier for the Chihuahua. By all means, do not allow it to impose dominance. Make it perform the tricks you taught it in a consistent manner. Training the Chihuahua is improving its behavior as well.
